Little Growers Activity: Make your own Salt Dough Ornaments

Making Christmas decorations with the little people in your life is such a fun festive tradition! We love these leaf pressed salt dough ornaments. Not only are they waste free and natural, but they will also look beautiful on your tree! We love that this recipe uses pantry staples and natural elements from your garden!

What you will need:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup cold water
  • Cookie cutters (or a round glass)
  • A rolling pin
  • A bowl
  • A wooden spoon
  • A mixture of leaves or other things from your garden
  • A reusable baking sheet (or baking paper)
  • Paint or food colouring if desired
  • A lollipop stick or straw to make a small hole
  • Twine

How you do it:

Step One

Forage different types of leaves or other natural things to press into your ornaments.

Step Two

Make your dough by mixing your flour and salt together in a bowl. Slowly mix water, a few tablespoons at a time, into the flour mixture until dough is smooth and easy to handle. Knead dough for 10 minutes then let rest for 20 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 120 degrees.

Step Three

Roll the dough to about 1cm thick. Cut out your desired shape and then start your leaf pressings. Make sure you press hard enough to get an imprint on your dough. But not hard enough for the middle to become too thin. Be sure to add a small hole at the top of your decoration for hanging.

Step Four

Bake in the preheated oven until dry and hard, approximately 2 hours. Allow to cool completely.
If you’d like to add some colour paint after baking with any poster paint. Food colouring can also be used in the mixing process if desired.

Step Five

Once dry, it’s time to hang these on the tree!
