Harvest In

1 - 2 Years

You can harvest canes when they are about 1-2 years old and have developed a rich colour, cutting close to the ground.

Prepare

Position

Sugarcane flourishes in full sunlight, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sun daily. Choose a location that offers ample light and protection from strong winds, which can damage the tall canes.

Soil

These plants prefer well-draining soil. Enrich the soil with plenty of organic matter like Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets to boost fertility. In clay soils, improve drainage by incorporating Gypsum Clay Breaker.

Care

Watering

Sugarcane needs consistent moisture, especially during the growing season. Water deeply once or twice a week, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. In hot, dry periods, increase the frequency of watering.

Feeding

Fertilise sugarcane with a high nitrogen fertiliser like Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster every 4-6 weeks during the active growth phase.

Mulching

Apply a thick layer of organic mulch, such as Living Earth More than Mulch, around the base of the plants. Mulching helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning

Pruning is not typically required for sugarcane. However, remove any damaged or diseased canes to maintain plant health. After harvesting, cut back the canes to ground level to promote new growth.

General Care

Regularly check for pests like aphids and borers. Use eco-friendly pest control methods and apply them carefully, following label instructions. Support tall canes with stakes if necessary to prevent them from bending or breaking.
