Harvest In

2 - 3 Years

Jujube fruits typically ripen in late summer to autumn. Harvest them when they turn from green to a reddish-brown or mahogany colour and yield slightly to pressure. The fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in cooking. For drying, pick the fruits when fully ripe, and dry them in a dehydrator or a warm, ventilated area until wrinkled and chewy.

Prepare

Position

Jujube trees prefer a location that receives full sun, with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. They are adaptable but thrive best in areas with hot summers and adequate light.

Soil

These trees are not fussy about soil types but prefer well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Enhance the soil with Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets to improve fertility. If planting in containers, use a well-draining potting mix.

Plant

Plant Jujube trees in early spring. Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Mix in some Tui Novatec Premium Fertiliser with the removed soil before backfilling the hole. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care

Watering

Water newly planted trees regularly to establish a deep root system. Once established, Jujube trees are drought-resistant but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially when the fruit is developing.

Feeding

Fertilise your Jujube tree with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer like Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster in early spring. A mid-season application of Tui Novatec Premium Fertiliser encourages healthy growth and fruit production.

Mulching

Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as Living Earth More than Mulch, around the base of the tree. This helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients as it breaks down.

Pruning

Prune Jujube trees in late winter to remove any dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches. This encourages better air circulation, sunlight penetration, and can improve fruit size and quality.

General Care

Inspect regularly for pests like aphids and scale insects. Use eco-friendly pest control solutions when necessary. Thin out the fruit if the branches are heavily laden to prevent breakage and improve the size and quality of the remaining fruit.
