Guzmanias are available throughout the year as Indoor plants

Prepare

Position

Indoors Guzmanias require a warm well lit position and should be kept out of direct sunlight.

Soil

When repotting your Guzmania plant into Kings House Plant Mix.

Plant

Guzmanias can also be grown outside in a free draining shaded position.

Care

Watering

Because moisture is collected through their leaves, Guzmanias like their leaves to be misted once or twice a week. Place distilled or filtered water in the central cup of the plant and replace every week with fresh water. Keep the potting mix moist during the spring and the summer months Like all houseplants, you want to water less from late autumn through to the end of winter.

Feeding

Guzmanias do not need a lot of fertiliser. Feed only in Spring and summer once a month with Baby Bio Orchid Fertiliser at half the stated rate.

Spraying

Mealy Bug can be a problem with Guzmanias in hot dry conditions. Spray with Groventive Garden to keep these pests under control.

Pruning

The only pruning should be to remove old dead leaves or the parent plant when it has died off.

General Care

When using sprays, chemicals or fertilisers always read the label and follow the instructions. Apply sprays in the evening to avoid harming beneficial insects.

Beginner Tip

Bromeliad flowers can last 3 to 6 months, but they typically flower just once, then produce new baby plants.

Expert Tip

The parent plant eventually dies after flowering which is just part of their cycle. Pups, or babies, will appear at the base of the mother plant. You can leave the pups attached to the mother, but cut away the flower & foliage after it has died off. Or, you can carefully remove the pups with a sharp, clean knife & pot them up in fresh potting mix or plant them outside.
