Celery is best grown when the temperatures are cooler such as in March, April and May or early spring.

Harvest In

80-85 days

To harvest either cut the whole plant from the ground or slide your thumb down the inside of the fattest stalks and gently twist to pull them off the plant.

Prepare

Position

Celery likes plenty of sun, plant where they get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight.

Soil

When planted into the ground Celery prefers a free-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. To improve the organic content in your soil, break up the soil and add Kings Compost and Kings Sheep Pellets then mix together well.

Plant

Seeds can be sown from January to May in warmer locations. Seedlings can be planted from March to July. Space your plants 30cm apart and in rows.

Care

Watering

Celery has shallow roots so dries out quickly. Water deeply and regularly to help keep celery healthy.

Feeding

For strong healthy roots and plants, apply monthly applications of Aquaticus Organic Garden Booster. Monthly applications of Kings Sheep Pellets will help with soil conditioning and plant health.

Protecting

Slugs and snails love a good munch on the crisp stalks. Lay Quash slug bait around the base of your plants and re-apply after rain.

Mulching

Mulching with straw will help the roots remain moist.

Spraying

Fungal problems such as leaf spots and rust can be a problem in areas that are humid. Spray at first sign of infection with Kiwicare Organic Super Sulphur.

General Care

When using sprays, chemicals or fertilisers always read the label and follow the instructions carefully. Apply sprays in the evening to avoid harming beneficial insects.
