Cacti are curious, often thorny (spiny), succulent-stemmed plants. Known for their ability to survive in dry conditions, each with their own unique characteristics. They have thick tissues that take up and hold large amounts of water which they slowly release, a bit at a time, keeping the plant alive even in the harshest environments.
Planting Calendar
Cacti are best planted in the hotter months of the year.
Prepare
Cacti are great for beginners or gardeners who are just starting out. Most of these plants will thrive in dry conditions, but make sure you have a good sunny spot for them to thrive in - being it in pots or in the garden. When choosing your plant, be careful not to get pricked by the thorns or spines.
Position
Cacti like a well lit position indoors, ideal for the windowsill or planted into full sun outside. Fantastic when planted in containers and placed in groups to create interest.
Soil
Cacti do best in well-drained soil, particularly in winter. Yates Cacti and Succulent Mix is specially formulated with the soil requirements of these plants in mind. Otherwise you can add coarse sand or fine pumice to ordinary potting mix for added drainage.. DO NOT plant cacti in mixes that contain water storage crystals as it can become too damp and could root rot.
Care
Watering
Contrary to popular beliefs, cacti still require water, especially in the warmer months. When grown in the ground, a good watering once every 3-4 weeks depending on the temperature should be enough. When planted into pots, water a little every 2 weeks. During winter protect your pots from too much water by moving them to a sheltered position.
Feeding
Always feed your cacti with Burnet's Organic Succulent & Cacti Food. This will ensure the nutrients are available for the plant when they require it and when the cactus is growing the most.
Protecting
If your cacti are being grown in the ground protect from slug and snails attack by applying a dressing of Quash.
Spraying
Mealybug and scale can be an issue with Cacti, more so when grown indoors. Spray at the first sign of insects with Groventive Garden.
General Care
When using sprays, chemicals or fertilisers always read the label and follow the instructions. Apply sprays in the evening to avoid harming beneficial insects.
Tip
When repotting, use a thick rag or a pair of old jeans to wrap the cacti up into to save getting thorns or spikes in your hands and gloves. If your cacti is large, get a pot that is slightly smaller than the plant to place it upside down into before replanting it - this can make it easier to move.
