Anthuriums are tropical flowering indoor plants, renowned for their large, waxy flowers that rise above the glossy, attractive foliage. A perfect desk companion or coffee table piece.
Planting Calendar
Anthuriums are available throughout the year.
Prepare
Position
Anthuriums prefer to grow in a position that is well-lit, but out of direct sunlight, as this may cause the leaves to burn and develop dry, brown patches. The better the light the more flowers you will get.
Soil
Plant into a free draining indoor potting mix that does not contain water crystals, like Kings Indoor Plant mix.
Plant
Repot your plant in spring when the roots appear at the bottom of the pot. Repot into a pot that is 5cm larger than the original, and plant into King House Plant Mix. Water in well after repotting.
Care
Watering
Anthuriums like to be kept evenly moist, not wet then dry. Water when the top 5cm of the soil is dry. Water until liquid flows through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot and discard any water that has accumulated in the saucer.
Feeding
Feed with Kings Liquid House Plant Food according to the instructions on the packet. Dilute fertiliser with water as per the instructions.
Protecting
Spray with Mavrik at the first sign of mites if needed.
Pruning
Prune to remove flowers that have started to fade and any browning leaves. Plants put a lot of energy into reviving dying or wilting leaves and flowers. By removing these the plant can put its energy into producing new leaves and flowers. Cut flowers and leaves off at the base of the stem, using a sharp pair of scissors or secateurs.
Beginner Tip
Anthuriums are tropical plants and will grow best if they are in a warm, humid environment. These conditions can be recreated by misting your plant to increase humidity levels.
Expert Tip
Give your Anthurium a six-week rest during the winter. Lower temperatures, less light, and drier soil during his time will help it produce more flowers in the spring and summer.
Tip
Dust can settle on the leaves and flowers of Anthuriums so with a damp soft cloth gently wipe any dust away.
