Prepare

Position

African violets like a warm, well lit situation but out of direct sunlight. However, do not leave them in bathrooms as they tend to gather moisture on their fuzzy leaves which can lead to mildew damage.

Soil

African violets are best grown in a free-draining mix such as Kings House Plant Mix.

Plant

Plant your African Violet into Kings Potting mix, ensure that the pot you are using has drainage holes and is not too large. African violets are easy plants to propagate during spring and summer. Select a healthy leaf and cut it from the main plant, with a 3 cm stem. Dip the tip in liquid rooting hormone and plant into Kings House Plant Mix. Keep the potting mix moist and a tiny new plant will develop in approx 2 months.

Care

Watering

African violets do not like being overwatered. Place the pot in a saucer of tepid water and allow the plant to take up the water into the soil through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. After 30 mins if there is any water left in the saucer empty it out so the roots do not sit in water. Don’t water again until the soil has almost dried out..

Feeding

Feed fortnightly with liquid African Violet Food, follow the dilution rate found on the back of the product.

Protecting

African Violets are pretty tough. Avoid getting the leaves wet, or placing your plants in a moist environment like bathrooms, as this can encourage Powdery Mildew.

Pruning

To keep your African violet looking good, remove any yellow or damaged leaves and spent flowers. Remove the complete flower stem once all flowers are finished as this will encourage the plant to produce more flowers. You can use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the stem.

Tip

African violet leaves can collect dust, to ensure the good health of your plant use a soft paint brush to remove the dust from the leaves.
