Little Growers Activity: Naturally Dyed Eggs
09 Apr, 2021
This is a great idea for colouring eggs at home in preparation for Easter. We recommend using hard-boiled eggs for the littlies. For bigger kids you can use uncooked, and once dyed, you can blow the insides out.
What you will need:
4 cups water
2 tbsp white vinegar
2 cups yellow onion skins/carrot for orange
2 cups red cabbage for purple
2 cups beetroot for pink
2 cups blueberries for blue
2 cups kale/spinach for green
2 tbsp turmeric for yellow
Unpeeled eggs
How to make them:
- Bring water and vinegar to the boil in a medium pot.
- Add selected colouring material and simmer for 35 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Strain the dye into a metal bowl. Add the eggs and let them soak for a minimum of 30 minutes, and for a deeper colour, let them sit longer.
- Use tongs to take them out of the dye, and pat them dry with a clean rag or paper towels.
Tips
- You can also put small dots of dye or acrylic paint all over the dyed eggs for added decoration.
- You can add special ingredients to dyes to change their colour instantly: to make blue, add ¾ teaspoon baking soda to the red cabbage dye; to make red, add juice of ½ a lime to the red cabbage dye.
- You can make natural veggie paint with any leftover dye. Combine 1 teaspoon of dye with approximately 6 teaspoons of icing sugar and mix well.
